Eco-Cycle to Work with Share-A-Gift
As many of you know, much of Share-A-Gift’s effort has centered on the collection and reuse/redistribution of gently-used toys, bikes, and books. But, we still deal with hundreds of toys that aren’t usable and with boxes, bags and packaging that need handling. Most of this can be recycled and our desire is to keep as much as possible out of the landfill.
This year, Share-A-Gift is stepping up efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our goal, by partnering with Eco-Cycle of Boulder, is to create a model zero-waste program that can be carried into future years.
We plan recycling and reuse during all phases of Share-A-Gift operations: Bike Night when bikes are restored, Toy Sorting days, the day when Toy Shop volunteers help Distribute the collected toys, and finally on Clean Up day.
Steve Cavanaugh, Zero-Waste Event Coordinator for Eco-Cycle, will be helping us by bringing containers, signage and volunteers to provide on-site training. Large bins will make it easier to sort cardboard, scrap metal, plastic and paper bags, wrapping paper, single stream items (like beverage bottles and cans), and even compost from snacks. Steve will be present on December 12, our first day of sorting, to help kick-off this expanded effort. Other Eco-Cycle volunteers will be around every day to help make this a successful zero-waste event. Share-A-Gift embraces Eco-Cycle’s mission to promote “individual and community action to transform society’s throw-away ethic into environmentally-responsible stewardship.”
One simple action you, as a volunteer, can take is to bring your own reusable water bottle or coffee cup when you come to help at the Toy Shop. Thanks!Share-A-Gift collected toys at Denver TV station KUSA‘s “9Cares Colorado Shares” program. Toys were collected at American Furniture Warehouse in Thornton, CO on October 27th. Much thanks to KUSA and American Furniture for their support.
Collected toys will be distributed between several non-profit organizations in the Denver metro area including Share-A-Gift.
